When it comes to naming their babies, some parents like to stay with tradition. This means nothing that is too different such as Nevaeh, which is “heaven” spelled backwards, or a name such as “Ziggy.” This simply means sticking to the more traditional names that include “Michael” and “Thomas.”

Some individuals like to stay with tradition when naming a child after a parent or grandparent. There is also the fact that the most traditional names are the strongest of names. It is always good to evaluate every angle of a name because that child will be starting school someday and the child does have to live with the name for the rest of their life.

So what are some good traditional baby names?

Traditional names

There are a lot of traditional baby names to choose from. Here are some that you may wish to consider if you are expecting and looking for something more traditional:

Alexander
Catherine
Alice
Henry
John
Peter
Rebecca
Sarah
Elizabeth
Matthew

You probably know someone with one of these names. What makes traditional names so special is that they have literally stood the test of time. Some of these names are names that have been around for thousands of years. This more or less has a lot to do with biblical origins. Many of these names are names that were present in the Bible and it has been tradition throughout many families to choose a biblical name for their child.

You will find biblical names most common amongst the Christian population. Traditional names such as John, Peter, Sarah, Rebecca, and Matthew are true because of this. There are also a variety of other names that include Mark, Luke, and Joshua that are common traditional names because of their biblical placement. However, this is not the only reason why individuals choose these names. Again, family tradition has much to do with it. So does culture.

If family tradition is a part of the deal, do not stray away just because of what is popular. Some of the above names are actually on the list of most popular names. As a matter of fact, Matthew, Sarah, and John are on the top 100 list and tend to remain there.

Which way to go?

So it is up to you whether you want to choose a traditional baby name or one that is a little more on the modern side. There are modern baby names that are strong and to the point. They don’t have strange pronunciations or weird spellings. When choosing a name, these are things to look at.

With traditional, there is not really any room for guessing with a name. However, you may choose to stay with a traditional name but choose a different spelling. Traditional does not mean you do not have some room for creativity. You can be as creative as you want. If you stay traditional with the first name, have some fun with the middle name. Just make sure everything fits.

Every parent wants to ensure that everything that surrounds their baby is conducive to the baby’s well being. A baby’s immune system is underdeveloped, and hence he/she is more susceptible to diseases and other problems such as allergies. People are gradually waking up to the hazards that the chemicals and toxins can cause. Regular clothing has large amounts of these chemicals. Often the baby clothes are treated to be stain retardant or are treated with heavy metals or chemicals in order to give the fabric a better finish.

These chemical residues in the fabric can lead to allergic reactions, asthma and cancers. Often enough these are also the cause of skin problem, irritation in eyes, throat and nose as the baby is sensitive and can easily get irritated by the chemicals present in the clothes. One of the commonly used chemical, Formaldehyde is often used to give the fabric a good finish. It is known to be carcinogenic is neurotoxin.

When a new baby comes in a house, special care is taken to ensure the best hygiene standards for him or her. All of the baby’s new clothing is washed in non-allergenic detergents in order to remove any chemical residues which could cause irritation to the baby’s skin. But still there some residues of the chemicals may remain in the clothes that have been made from traditional crops and manufactured fibers. So what do you do?

There is one simple answer: Ensure that you purchase guaranteed organic baby clothing for your baby. The organic clothes are those that are made using natural fibers, which have been grown organically, i.e. without using any chemicals. Some of these organic fibers are organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, jute and linen. No chemicals or artificial fertilizers are employed in organic farming, nor are any pesticides or herbicides used.

The procedure of making the organic clothes involves weaving fibers into the cloth without use of chemicals or bleaches. All the colors that are used for dyeing are obtained from natural vegetable dyes. The organic farming is closely legislated and overseen in order to ensure that the mandatory guidelines are followed. Similarly the organic clothes manufacturing industry is also kept under supervision.

By exclusively using organic clothing for your little baby, you are postponing their exposure to the harmful chemicals which are otherwise present all around them. And even though the cost of the organic baby clothing is more, yet the burden on your pocket will lose its relevance as you begin to appreciate the amazing benefits of organic fabrics. Also make sure that your family and friends know about your decision to use only organic baby clothing for your newborn, so that the baby can be protected from any avoidable illnesses.

Organic baby clothes are available from Bamboo Baby who sell both retail and wholesale baby clothes online.

The realization that you are pregnant often brings with it lots of questions and indecisiveness. Although a fun and exciting time, preparation for your new baby can be stressful. One of the tasks that you never thought would be difficult is a basic one – choosing your baby’s name!

Many parents-to-be choose potential names long before they are pregnant. For some, it is important to use the name of a special relative or friend and for others there simply may be a name that has a particular meaning. But sometimes one parent has ideas that the other does not necessarily hold. Another common situation is that family members have relentless suggestions and ideas for the name.

Perhaps the mommy-to-be may have always planned to name her son or daughter after favorite movie stars. But the daddy-to-be does not care for those stars, or even for the names. Or what if your preferred names are now the names of nieces or nephews – should those names still be used?

Okay, relax, take a deep breath and very selectively begin making baby names lists. Consider one for favorite names, one for family names, and then begin making a list of names that you definitely do not like now that you see them on paper. Although simplistic in nature, this method can alleviate some of the stress.

After you have your lists complete it is time to allow your husband to look them over and add to or even shorten each list. You may need to be patient with him; after all, you had time to think about these lists as you put them together.

After your husband has added his ideas it is time for the two of you to discuss why you do or do not like a name. Honesty is important in this situation – if a name reminds you of someone or something you should discuss that. Compromising may be the key to finding the right name for your baby. Choosing a name that satisfies both of you may not be an easy process, but it is definitely a worthwhile task!

Susan Brochman is a freelance writer and a mother of seven. One of her articles shares her experiences related to the birth of her triplets – all girls. Susan said that the selection of names was not an easy process for her and her husband. The names given to their children had to have special Name Meanings so with each pregnancy the task had been dubious. Susan says that coming up with three meaningful Girl Names at once was overwhelming but through the process narrowing down the names on her lists she and her husband were able to find three beautiful names, all with special meanings!

Whether you are in your third trimester or you just found out you’re pregnant, there’s a good chance you have worried over what to name your baby. For some of us nothing but a biblical name will do. For others, it is much more important to pass along family names or to name our child after someone special to us. But for others it is the meaning of the name that is important.

Whether you have ever considered this or not, names do have meanings associated with them. Do those name meanings really matter? Well, you will have to be the judge of that.

The fact is that some names actually have very nice things associated with them. And some people believe that the name given to a child will influence the type of person that he or she grows up to be or inherent personality traits. Examples might include the names Felix, Jason, and Agnes. The meanings associated with these names are as follows:

* Felix – Cheerful
* Jason – Healer
* Agnes – Pure

Another angle of name meaning is that certain names may be associated with particular ethnic groups or nations. Some are even associated with various social statuses.

But yet another angle of name meaning is that of what a name means to you as a parent. It might be your favorite names have a meaning that is unique to you. Perhaps a name like Mary makes you happy because it conjures up memories of the movie “Mary Poppins” and that was a childhood favorite for you. This simplistic example demonstrates the way our mind works in name association. If a name reminds us of a pleasant experience or something or someone that we care about we are likely to associate that name with pleasantries.

The flipside to all this name meaning is that many adults do not know what the ‘meaning’ of their name is, so in reality, is the meaning important at all? When selecting a name it may be wise to consider that even if you do not associate a meaning with a name, some people will. But in the end, it is you, your husband and your child that should be satisfied with the selection. Deciding upfront if the meaning of the name is important can help with the  decision-making process.

Patricia Madison is an editor and publisher of short stories. In her work she enjoys reading about characters with unique and unordinary names. Patricia has found that many of the female story characters seem to have personality traits that are associated with the Girl Names used. That discovery prompted Patricia to make a study of Baby Names and their meanings. She plans to publish a report on the topic in the near future.

In choosing a name for our unborn babies we of course want to insure that the name selected is appropriate in every way. This includes the fact that we want our baby’s name to have a pleasing sound and maybe even a special meaning attached to it. So we pour over websites and books to find that perfect name for our perfect little baby boy or girl.

After the name is finally selected the parents-to-be can happily mark that task off their to-do list of preparation for the new arrival. Even with today’s technology strange things do sometimes happen. More than a few new parents have discovered that the little boy they thought was coming turned out to be a little girl, or vice-versa. Then the scramble for a suitable name begins.

The saving grace for parents can be the selection of a gender-neutral name. Although the spelling of such names is sometimes altered the pronunciation is generally the same. Let’s take a look at ten of these names:

* Alex
* Carson
* Casey
* Drew
* Jamie
* Jaylen
* Morgan
* Ryan
* Sydney
* Tyler

As you look over that short list you are probably having your own ideas of which ones are more suitable for boys and which are girl names. The truth is that these names, and many others, are popular choices for both sexes. However, some of them are definitely used more often for one gender than the other.

In reality, a gender-neutral name often provides more originality and adds an interesting twist. Check out the following list:

* Cameron
* Dakota
* Parker
* Peyton
* Reagan
* Reese
* Taylor
* Skylar
* Chase
* Jessie

Although you may immediately sense that some of these names are better suited for a male, or for a female, that may be due to your past experiences. Perhaps you once knew someone with that name and so you are predisposed to associating it with that gender. However, keeping an open mind regarding the gender-appropriateness of such names will provide you with a much wider selection of name choices. Why limit yourself to fewer choices – explore all your options!

Harley McPhergason is the daughter of motorcycle enthusiasts. She owns and operates a baby boutique in Florida. Ms. McPhergason (Harley), often shares with her customers the advantages that her unique name has provided. Harley advises that her gender-neutral name allows her to maintain gender anonymity in her business dealings – which can sometimes be beneficial. According to her, when choosing Baby Names it is best to select one that is original and that stands out for one reason or another. Ms. McPhergason stated that the name ‘Harley’ has opened doors for her that would have otherwise remained closed. Why? As she says, “As unfair as it may be, some people have pre-conceived ideas about Name Meanings and that usually works in your favor!”

When you are given the news that a baby is on the way a million things go through your mind. From preparing a nursery to deciding if you should breast-feed or use a bottle and everything in between, your mind is spinning. And you have to decide on the perfect name!

Many parents begin right away deciding which baby names suit them. But others wait until they know the sex of the baby and some wait until the baby is born to make a decision. No matter when you decide to choose a name there’s a chance that it will prove to be a daunting task.

That task is even more complicated if you and your husband have differences of opinion about suitable names. This sometimes comes about when one parent or the other has specific thoughts about the baby’s name. What sort of specific thoughts you may ask. Oftentimes there is a desire by the mother or the father to name the baby after oneself or another family member. This may have been something that he or she thought would go without a discussion or disagreement.

Another common scenario is that you may have always wanted and planned a particular name for your baby. But now you have friends or relatives by that name; should you use the name anyway?

Next you might want to consider the meanings behind certain names and things associated with them. This may not be important to you but it might be to your husband or your child as he/she matures. Did you know that the following names have been associated with being unattractive…..:

* Helen
* Elizabeth
* Richard
* Caroline

Of course we want to give our babies all the advantages possible in life, and if a name can possibly help then many parents will go that route. The following names have been associated with success:

* Elizabeth
* Caroline
* Richard
* Helen

You caught it – the same names are on both lists! The point is that you should not be influenced by things that are not really important or factual. Naming your baby is a personal thing that should be decided by you and your husband. You get to set the criteria for determining a perfect name!

Leslie Allgood is a registered nurse that has worked in labor and delivery for over a decade. Ms. Allgood has helped to ease the stress of making a last minute name choice for many couples. She suggests that rather than focusing on Name Meanings the parents should consider names that they like. According to Ms. Allgood, most new parents give more consideration to choosing Girl Names than boy names.

Baby showers are fun and interesting, and they are the kind of events that people enjoy attending. Actually, it seems that the games are the essential ingredient of a fun baby shower. The importance of entertaining party guests should never be ignored or minimized.

People enjoy the games because they offer an element of friendly competition and the opportunity to win a gift to take home. While some creative people enjoy designing their own party games many hostesses are stumped when it comes to creating a game of their own. But there is no shortage of pre-designed games. While there are lots of game choices, some of the most popular are focused on names and the meaning of names.

This probably comes as no surprise since names can be so entertaining. A very simple baby names game is that of writing the chosen name for the baby at the top of a sheet of paper. Give a copy to each party guest and then start the clock. Allow two minutes for them to make up as many real words as they can from the letters contained in the name. The guest with the longest list wins.

Sometimes a baby shower is given before the parents have decided on a name. In this case the shower guests may actually help the parents out. Purchase or make a cute notebook that can be passed around to each guest. They can enter the name of their choice as well as a comment/suggestion, or two for their selection. This provides the parents with lots of new things to think about and a very nice keepsake to have. Imagine the fun of discussing these ideas with your child when he/she is old enough to understand.

Before the shower you can learn the meanings of each guest’s name. This can be used to create various games, such as asking each person to share the meaning of, or at least what they believe to be the meaning of their name. The one that comes the closest to the actual meaning wins. Another way to use this information is to list the guest in one column and the meanings in another, they should be mixed up. Then time the guests to match the name with the appropriate meaning. The person with all or the most correct matches wins.

With ideas like these it is easy to see why people look forward to baby showers – they’re fun!

Valerie Wilson is a professional party planner located in Wisconsin. Ms. Wilson often includes games as part of party entertainment, and according to her, “A baby shower without games is a waste of valuable time.” Ms. Wilson suggests playing games that focus on Name Meanings. She says that both Girl Names and boy names can be used creatively in games to add interest and fun.

Cloth diapers have been making a huge comeback from their decline in the late sixties when disposable diapers first started to make their appearance. Cloth diapers have many advantages over disposables, including the fact that they are not filling our landfills!

There are three main benefits of cloth diapers:

  1. Cloth diapers are better for your babies skin. There are little or no chemicals in cloth diapers and that means fewer chemicals coming in contact with your babies sensitive skin and leading to diaper rash. Organic diapers have even less impact on babies skin and their manufacture is better for the environment.

  2. Cloth diapers are better for the environment. As mentioned above, the manufacturing process of organic diapers has little impact on our environment. In addition, cloth diapers are not filling up our landfills at an alarming rate like disposables are. According to a 2003 study published by the women’s environmental network, disposable diapers are the third largest consumer item in landfills and make up about 4 % of all solid waste. No one knows exactly how long it takes for the average disposable diaper to decompose, but it has been estimated at anywhere from 250 to 500 years. That means that the diapers you throw away today will still exist when your great, great, great grandchildren are born. Astounding as these numbers may seem they are higher still in 2009.

  3. Cloth diapers are less expensive than their disposable counterparts. Thirty cloth diapers will cost approximately $600 if you purchase the better ones (Pocket diapers, organic diapers and the all in one style of diaper). This is enough cloth diapers to last for the entire time that your baby requires them. On the other hand, to purchase enough disposable diapers to last you through the time needed for your baby would cost over $3000.! It’s a huge difference and well worth the savings – especially in these difficult economic times. The savings would be even more noticed by purchasing simple prefolded diapers at a cost of under $100 for the usage time of your baby you will have all the cloth diapers and covers you need.

Your choice of cloth diapers will be measured through the years – both in financial savings and environmental savings. It’s vitally important that we all realize the negative impact disposable diapers have had on our environment. Yes, they are a part of the “Women’s Lib” movement and a rightful part at that. However, the time has come for a new sense of responsibility to our home and our babies.

Let’s leave something for future generations. Let cloth diapers be your choice.

Have you ever encountered a fussy baby? Sure, we all have. There are many reasons for a baby to be uncomfortable. He can be in need of food, in need of a diaper change, in need of a burping, or even in need of a change in position (such as sitting up, lying down, cuddling, hugging, or just being held).

After the first three months of colic and getting used the the baby’s habits, there comes another stage of discomfort called teething. A baby will normally begin getting his first teeth anytime between six and eight months of age. The gums will begin to swell and cause the child to be very uncomfortable. He will likely cry a lot, try biting on things, and drool from the mouth. Sometimes a baby will also grab at his ears when something is not quite right. But before the new parents just assume that this is all due to teething, they should have the baby’s health checked by a physician to make sure that nothing else is wrong with the child. The grabbing at the ears can sometimes mean an ear infection.

Once the parent determines that the baby is healthy and actually is beginning to cut teeth, there are some things that can be done to make the little one more comfortable. The biting instinct puts pressure on the swollen gums and eases the pain. That’s probably the same reason puppies are so prone to chew on everything they find. The baby needs something hard to bite on. I’ve even had little ones clamp down pretty darn hard on my fingers. A teething ring is the most popular item to fulfill that need to bite. Most teethers have a textured, rubbery, rounded surface to prevent poking and scratching the baby. Some teething rings are water filled and can be put in the freezer. The icy cold feeling numbs the gums and gives the baby relief.

The teething “drool” is prevalent in babies because they aren’t accustomed to swallowing their saliva like we do. The drooling can cause problems if it’s not taken care of. A baby’s chest and neck can get soaking wet and cause a bad rash if left unattended. Many mothers put a teething bib on the child to keep him dry. An infant’s wet clothing should be changed in a timely fashion. The baby’s skin should be wiped with a soft cotton cloth to absorb the moisture. Tissues sometimes irritate the tender skin even more. Petroleum jelly or a similar ointment is a good protective agent against a sore chin, face, chest, and neck.

Normally, the two middle bottom teeth are the first that a baby will get. After a few weeks the top front teeth will appear. Even though the baby is tiny, these new teeth need cleaning with a very soft brush or wet cloth to remove plaque from around them and the gums. Just using water will do fine, as regular toothpaste should not be used with an infant.

BabyBlanketBabe.com is a website that has a variety of unique, colorful, soft cotton, animated bibs and travel blankets that have “built in” teethers. The teethers are cleverly integrated into the features of animals such as fins, wings, braids, and even tongues. These bibs and blankets make a good matching pair for a perfectly beautiful and useful baby gift that will be greatly appreciated at “teething time”.

JoAnn Williams is the owner/operator of the BabyBlanketBabe.com online store. She is a mother, grandmother, and retired elementary and middle school teacher. She has seen the results and recognizes that the care and nuturing a child gets as a baby follows him throughout his many stages of maturing.
